Moses was God's spokesperson. To Pharaoh and to the Israelites. The episode in Exodus is only the beginning. Repeatedly in Leviticus and Numbers it says, "speak to the people," or, "speak to the Israelites." Where did his words come from? Speaking requires listening. How many words do you say in a day? Is every one of them your words? Are you always just speaking for yourself? Could the words you speak ever be God's words? Who speaks for God? Who can? Who wants!? Moses didn't. People who are anxious and eager to speak for God seldom do. Moses wasn't Charlton Heston. He was meek, humble, and reluctant. But it was out of God's speaking to him that he was able to speak for God with others.

When it doesn't seem like God's plan for our life is working out, do we try to take matters into our own hands? Is it that we lose faith in God or is it sometimes that we lose faith in our own ability to be part of God's plan? God had a plan for Sarah's life. But greater her own inadequacies loomed, the more improbable it seemed that God would fulfill His plan through her. Do we, like Sarah, try to come up with our own plan instead? Perhaps there are plans in our lives right now that we need to loosen our grip on so that we can hang tight to the plan God has for us.
